Outline of Group/Organization
The Japan Neurosurgical Society was established on May 3, 1948, with the aim of contributing to the development of science in Japan by promoting the advancement and dissemination of neurosurgery through the publication of the theory and application of neurosurgery, the exchange of knowledge, and both cooperation between the members and with related academic societies in Japan and worldwide. The Society held its first formal congress in Niigata, Japan, on May 4, 1949. Neurosurgery was first recognized in Japanese law as a medical department in 1965, although neurosurgery departments had been previously established at the University of Tokyo Hospital and Niigata University. Subsequently, many departments of neurosurgery were formed at all faculties of medicine and large hospitals, and the membership of the Society rapidly increased. Improvement of the standards of neurosurgery is one of the main aims of the Society. Therefore, the Society introduced the certification of neurosurgeons in 1967. Members of the Society were selected by members of the Certification Review Board, training site directors, and surgeons recommended by training site directors, and were awarded the status of board certified neurosurgeon. The certification has depended on success in written and oral examinations administered to all applicants since 1969. The Society currently has about 8,300 members, the majority of whom are neurosurgeons. Currently, about 6,500 members are board certified neurosurgeons. The Japanese Congress of Neurological Surgeons was established for the purpose of providing continuing education for board certified neurosurgeons and held its first congress in February 1981. The World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) was organized in September 1955, and the Japan Neurosurgical Society became a member society at the 1st International Congress of Neurological Surgery (ICNS) in July 1957. The Incorporated Association of the Japan Neurosurgical Society was established on December 4, 2003, with the granting of a permit by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan. This development gives the Society various legal rights and the official recognition to participate in public interest activities. The Society intends to establish various committees to oversee and promote the activities of the Society for the fulfilment of its social responsibilities.
